There are many concerns that churches have when thinking about creating a sensory space.

Do we have enough room?
Do we have money in the budget?
Where do we even start?

All of these questions are valid. However, the good news is that creating a sensory space doesn’t have to require a lot of money. In fact, even $100 can make a big difference!

It’s Okay to Start Small

A sensory space doesn’t have to be a full room with expensive equipment. It can be a quiet corner in a small, designated area, or a simple portable setup that provides comfort and calm. What matters most is not how much you spend, but how intentional you are with creating the space.

What Can $100 do?

Churches can provide a combination of tools that support a variety of sensory needs. Here’s an example of what a $100 setup might include:

  • Noise-reducing headphones to help lower overwhelming sounds
  • Fidget tools to support focus and self-regulation
  • Soft seating like a bean bag or floor cushion
  • A weighted lap pad or blanket for calming pressure
  • A small projector light or calming visual

For an autistic person, access to even one of these items at the right moment can make the difference between being able to stay in the service and leaving. Each item serves a purpose and when used together, they create an atmosphere where an autistic person can regulate, regroup, and reengage.

Make the Most of Your Space

You don’t have to be perfect to get started. Here are some things to consider in your plan:

  • Choose a quiet area in your church
  • Keep the sensory space simple and uncluttered
  • Make sensory items easily accessible
  • Communicate clearly that the space is available when needed

Remember, the sensory space should be viewed as a support and not a weekly designated place for the entire service. We strongly encourage inclusion whenever possible.

The Message Your Sensory Space Sends

While sensory tools are helpful, the message behind them matters even more. Creating a sensory space communicates care and concern. It shows individuals and families that they are seen, valued and wanted. That message is part of what creates a sense of belonging.

Space to Belong

Through our Space to Belong initiative, we are helping churches take steps toward inclusion. Twenty churches will receive up to $100 in sensory supplies to begin creating a space that supports autistic individuals in their congregation. When churches take even small steps with intention, they create environments where people of all abilities can fully participate in worship.

If your church has been waiting for the “right time” or the “right budget,” this is your sign. Start now. Take the first step with our Space to Belong initiative. Places of worship from any faith are invited to participate. Registration starts on Monday, April 13th at 8:00am EST.
